One Directions tattoo collections

One Direction fans were aflutter on Sunday when a photo of Harry Styles' latest tattoo – a butterfly image on his chest – was released online. The tattoo is the latest in a long line for the singer and his bandmates – click on our photo gallery below to see details.

The boy band may have something of an addiction to tattoos, but they sparked controversy on Saturday when they seemed to encourage their fans to follow suit. The five-piece, which comprises, Niall HoranZayn MalikLouis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Harry posted a message on Twitter and Facebook asking fans to send photos of their 1D tattoos for the chance to appear in their upcoming 3D movie.

The post was removed following complaints that they were encouraging their younger fans to get tattoos. "The tweet was posted in error and has now been removed," explained One Direction's publicist Simon Jones. "One Direction do not want to encourage any of their fans to get 1D tattoos."

The boy band do seem to encourage each other to get tattoos, however. Zayn Malik may have started the inking craze, but teen heartthrob Harry Styles tops the list with around 30.

Louis recently got a tattoo of a cup of tea that seems to pay tribute to the lyrics from the band’s hit song Little Things, "You can't go to bed without a cup of tea. Maybe that's the reason that you talk in your sleep."

The teacup forms part of the random collection of tattoos on his right arm, and sits above an etching of a the word 'OOPS!', a camera, a large compass and a stickman on a skateboard among others.

Zayn's body art ranges from the words "ZAP!", reportedly standing for Zayn and Perrie Edwards, his Little Mix singer girlfriend, to an image of a microphone on his forearm.

Harry Styles is number one for treating his body like a blank canvas, however, and seems to like pairings. He's inked Greek tragedy and comedy masks on his left side, and "Things I can" on his right forearm against "Thing I can't" on his left. His more random choices include a 99p on his wrist, a "Hi" on his upper left arm and a black lock on his left wrist. He also has a love heart and his sister's name in Hebrow.

Liam Payne is one of the tamer boyband members when it comes to tattoos, favouring slogans such as "Everything I wanted, but nothing that I'll ever need" on his left forearm and "Only time will tell" on his left wrist.

He recently admitted that his mum was not impressed. "My mum went crazy about the whole tattoo idea," he said.

Irish singer Niall Horan has admitted that his attempt at getting "Made in Ireland" tattooed on his bottom was thwarted. A tattoo artist in Los Angeles is reported to have told Niall that he had too much cushioning, advising, "The skin on your arse is too squidgy. It needs to be tight."

Niall laughed it off, replying, "I suspect they did me a favour. It wasn't the best idea in the world."

Celebrity Tattoos

When it comes to celebrity tattoos, there are two approaches that people consider. The first is to emulate a design that is similar to their favorite movie star, athlete, or musician.

The second approach is to actually pay homage to a celebrity by inking their likeness onto their body. For this reason, people are constantly keeping a lookout for the latest trends in celebrity tattoos.

As you scan your favorite magazine, television show, or film, the lives of celebrities unfold to the point that you are able to pinpoint each and every time they mark their body with a new tattoo. While you may or may not desire the same exact tattoo, their choices may encourage your creative juices and help you explore what you want out of a design.
Outside of athletes and musicians, one of the more popular tattooed celebrities is Angelina Jolie, who has influenced many to explore the world of tribal tattoos, with the dragon, tiger, and foreign writing found on her shoulders and arms.

While movie stars are rather influential in the trends of tattooing, the choices of musicians are followed as well. An assortment of R&B artists, hip-hop, and rock stars are often scrutinized for the various creations they display. For example, the "Thug Life" tattoo that Tupac showcased on his stomach has inspired numerous tattoo designs over the years.
While the tattoos that celebrities select have persuaded many to follow the same path, it is the accomplishments or connections that fans make with these stars that also influences tattoo designs. Music is a powerful source of healing, which has encouraged some to tattoo their favorite artists onto their body in remembrance of their heartache, pain, and triumph.

Some celebrity tattoos are meant to celebrate life and the things that mean the most. A musician may choose a tattoo of Mozart, while a painter may side with Van Gogh. Additional celebrity tattoos that are quite popular include Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Jordan, and Bruce Lee.
