Hawai'i and Germany Meet Halfway in Manhattan

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, September 5, 2010

Last Sunday, I found myself unexpectedly in my weekday stomping grounds, outside of Penn Station. I saw a couple sitting on the steps in Penn Plaza and noticed the gentleman had a remarkable tattoo on his outer left calf.

We had a slight language barrier, as they were tourists from Europe. But Rico agreed to let me take the photo:

The tattoo was done by Tom at Stechwerk Tattoo Studio in Kempten, Germany.

Rico said he just liked the design and that Hawai'i is somewhere he hopes to visit one day. The surfboard and the archipelago outline are symbolic of our fiftieth state, and the yellow hibiscus is the state flower.

Danke schn to Rico for sharing this cool Hawai'i-themed tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Tattoosday Goes to Hawaii: A Floral Sneak Peak @ O'Hare, Courtesy of Jennifer

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, May 6, 2010

When I first booked my trip to Honolulu and saw I had a brief layover in Chicago, I challenged myself to find at least one cool tattoo at the airport.

Lucky for me, I found Jennifer from Portland, Maine, sporting this lovely hibiscus foot tattoo:

The hibiscus being the state flower of Hawai'i, I saw this as a good omen.

Jennifer explained that she based the design for this tattoo on a photo in a magazine.

Why the foot? She had one tattoo on her back and "wanted one she could see".

This floral piece was inked in about two and a half hours at Pins and Needles Tattoo at home in Portland. Work from Pins and Needles has appeared previously on Tattoosday here.

Thanks to Jennifer for humoring this traveling inkspotter and sharing her hibiscus with us here on Tattoosday!

Mike's Incredible Aquatic Sleeve (and More!)

Posted by Unknown on Monday, March 29, 2010

I had the good fortune of meeting Mike outside of Penn Station last week and, despite first noticing him because of his leg tattoos, he was extremely generous and unveiled an incredible sleeve that covered his right arm:

Mike is a fisherman and a loves the brightness, color and variety of oceanic life. Such things translate well to the body's canvas and make for some amazing tattoo work...

The giant octopus actually curls up over his shoulder and onto his chest, with one tentacle moving down his arm....

The deep sea diver punctuates the middle of his arm...

At the bottom of the arm are tropical motifs including a huge tiki god and a hibiscus....

On the inside of his inner bicep is this fish which is a cross between an anglerfish and a razorfish:

And we ended with this piece that was so fresh at the time, that Mike had to peel back the protective plastic covering this amazing blowfish:

The artist behind this amazing work is Steve Woison formerly of Electric Tiki Tattoo in Patchogue, and now at Studio 520 in Oakdale, on Long Island.

Thanks again to Mike for taking the time to share his amazing aquatic sleeve with us here on Tattoosday!
